Sumanas
Ragas for the Heart and Circulatory System |
|
Track
1: Carnatic Todi is an evening raga, with the rasas,
or moods, of devotion and sympathy. The combination of lowered
notes emphasized in this recording is intended to produce
a soothing effect on the emotions, a result of the cascading
downward flow of notes which may benefit the circulatory
system by regulating blood pressure.

General note
on the music:
The stated and intended
effects of this music are based on several factors, including the study
of many psychological and music therapy sources on the effects of ragas
and their notes, our knowledge of the ragas, and the intuition of the
performers. In addition, medical research was conducted in two Madras
hospitals in the winter of 2001 by Dr. P. Bharathi, and demonstrated
positive preliminary results. For one, blood pressure was lowered in
a group who listened regularly to Sumanas, compared to a control group
who did not listen to the recordings.
Quotes and reactions
from other listeners confirm the relaxing quality of Sumanas, as well
as the relaxing/invigorating effects of hearing Vriddhi.
"I am really
enjoying the Vriddhi CD. I listen and nap very deeply, awakening
feeling better. Thank you! Your sound blends beautifully with the
veena."
Carla Van Arnam, T'ai Chi teacher in Charlottesville, VA
"I play these
recordings constantly while working on clients. They are very effective."
"At times, the music charges me, adding a vigorous flow to my
work. At other times, it allows me to channel my energies into a more
calm pace."
David Greenhouse, LMT in New York City
From other professionals
and friends:
"I sleep
much better after listening to Sumanas. It is very relaxing."
"I've heard
a lot of CDs that claim to be able to relax me, which is no easy task.
When I listened to Vriddhi and Sumanas, I found my body
nicely relaxed as I had to reach for the repeat button"
Chris Sampson, KPFT 90.1 Houston
"This music
is pure joy to the heart. I have not heard anything like it before.
I play the music to all of my yoga students and classes"
Barbara Newborn, Yoga instructor, Chief of staff of National Stroke
Medical Education Institute
"Great tape
for bodywork, especially when people need to be focused in their bodies
and their minds' stilled."
Kate Stewart, bodywork/zero-balancing practitioner and exercise
teacher in Surrey, England
